The City of Manchester Stadium, known more commonly nowadays as the Etihad, was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and then taken over by Manchester City for the start of the 2003/04 season. Although the football club didn’t have to buy the ground, they have spent a bit of money on improving it and increasing the capacity. Taking out the running track and lowering the pitch, being just two of the improvements made, to increase the capacity to just over 53,000 and there are plans in place to increase this to 60,000 by expanding the North Stand. Some die hard fans may still prefer Maine Road but, given the trophies paraded around the Etihad pitch over the last few years, most supporters are enjoying the new surroundings.
